As far as numbing down visual effects, simple stuff, the little annoying things that would lag a computer a little. Anything else you guys can offer would be nice too.

    Cleanout the PC of dust

Makesure all fans are working (including the powersupply fan)

    Defrag

    Try emptying your Temp folders.

    Use this free utility

    ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.

    If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

    If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

I'll have to defrag later... I know I'm due for one, it's probably been over a year.

Would doing things like... making the scheme look like Windows 98 or something make things run smoother? Numbing down the visuals? (If so, where do I find the list of stuff?)

And that program did clear a lot of stuff. Thanks.

In your Display Properties>>Appearane>>Effects you can turn off menu effects, show shadows, and show Window contents while dragging.

A few things that will improve performance:

In System Properties performance settings, click "custom" snd uncheck all of the boxes except the one for "Use drop shadows...".

In Desktop Properties themes, use "Windows Classic" theme.

Run XP with a minimum of 512MB RAM (especially if you have onboard graphics).

If you have Norton or McAfee security products, ditch them and replace with AVG and ZoneAlarm (Norton and McAfee are notoriously CPU and memory resource hogs).
