I have Windows XP and have the following things in the Startup tab when I run msconfig that I was wondering whether or not they are mandatory:

    ehtray
    ARPWRMSG
    DISCover
    DiscUpdateMgr
    DMAScheduler
    RECGUARD
    HPBootOp
    adjust
    Remind_XP
    HPwuSchd2
    ctfmon
    NMBgMonitor
    Adobe Gamma Loader

There are few things that are blank under Startup Item and Command but show a location of HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run . Can I uncheck those?

Also, do I need all of this stuff running all the time? (These are under Processes in the Task Manager):

    hpsysdrv.exe
    atiptaxx.exe
    ALCXMNTR.EXE
    kbd.exe
    DiscStreamHub.exe
    wmiprvse.exe
    MCC Monitor.exe
    NMBgMonitor.exe
    ~e5.0001
    svchost.exe
    hpwuSchd2.exe
    ehmsas.exe
    DiscGui.exe
    DMAScheduler.exe
    DISCUpdateMgr.exe
    DiscCover.exe
    arpwrmsg.exe
    ehtray.exe
    cftmon.exe
    LSSrvc.exe
    ehSched.exe
    rhrecvr.exe
    arservice.exe
    alg.exe
    spoolsv.exe
    ati2evxx.exe
    svchost.exe
    dllhost.exe
    svchost.exe
    svchost.exe
    mcrdsvc.exe
    svchost.exe
    svchost.exe
    ati2evxx.exe
    lsass.exe
    services.exe
    winlogon.exe
    csrss.exe
    smss.exe
    svchost.exe
    AcroRd32.exe
    MDM.EXE
    System
    System Idle Process

    Thank you in advance:)

You can go to this page and search each and every one of these items in the first thread and this will tell you if they are to be kept or not.

    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/

Just read the instructions and away you go. ALso write each one down so you know what you did with each.

~e5.0001 is copy-protection features of CD based games usually made by EA (ie. Battlefield 2, Sims 2, etc.) that runs temporarily with the game.
