This may be a stupid question, but when I try to connect my new external hard drive (that will be used for backup and file storage), how do I partition it? I have decided that I need to, but am not sure how to go about it. I do not have Partition Magic, but do run WindowsXP. I want to make sure I partition it before I start putting anything on it. Thanks for your help!

Check the manufacturers website. They should have a program you can use to do it (usually automatically). I would check to be sure it is the one you need. Not sure if you need a special program for an external.

THere is no need to use any outside software---go to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management/DiskManagement/and format---if you are using the external for storage you only need one partition--just format.
