I've cancelled my subscription to Norton for a number of reasons. The cancellation date is effective January 7th. I've been looking at two different free anti virus programs--Bitdefender and Avast. I have Windows 7. Here's the problem, with Norton I had coverage for a lot of things besides anti virus protection. If I choose one of the free programs shouldn't I also download other programs to support the free program. If so, what programs are best suited for additional protection? I don't need a backup program. I was never able to convince Norton of that. Thanks for any suggestions.
Most security is a matter of user education. Pay attention to what you are doing, especially if you visit risky sites, and you likely won't have any issues.
I've had only a few issues in my years of PC use, and each time it was the result of something that I had done.
Having said that, I use the basic Windows firewall and MSE for AV. Quarterly I will run Malwarebytes just to ensure all is good. That's all I've used since upgrading to Windows 7 (years ago). I used AVG initially, but after the version change it was bloated and slow, so I ditched it for MSE.
AV is a matter of personal preference, and you will likely get a different answer from everyone that responds. Unless you get/use a lot of files from questionable sources, or move data from PC to PC often via a USB drive, a virus shouldn't be an issue.
Thanks to all who responded. After I posted this question I checked the General Security forum and saw basicly the same information. You're right Oddball11. There were a lot of responses from different people.
