Techguy has a message on the bottom of the screen saying "would like your permission to enable push notifications". What happens if I enable it, does it show notificaiions on the right side of the desktop? If it is displayed on the right side of the desktop and I enable some more notifications from other sites, will I get overwhelmed with notification dinging me every 5 mins? Can I turn it off any time if I don't like it? What good is it, since I already have the bell icon on the top right of the page notifying me of new posts to threads I follow. I don't want to be a lab mouse and test out new technology only to find out it is irreversible.

Now I Know I am getting old, not willing to try out new fangled stuff.

It pops up a little message down in the lower right-hand corner of your main monitor every time there is a new post in a thread you follow. I use it, though I also have the email notifications enabled. It does pretty much the same thing, but it is more immediate. I imagine you could disable it if you decide you dislike it. I haven't looked into that.

OK, I've looked into it. It's in your profile settings:

The push notifications will appear at the bottom of your screen even if you're not on the site at the time. Also, in addition to what Mark said, if you go further down in your Preferences beyond enabling/disabling it you will see multiple options available for alerts and there you can select whether you want the push notification or the alert or both. It can be for replies in a watched thread, receiving a personal conversation, when someone mentions you in a post, etc. Basically anything the alert does with the main difference being you don't have to actually be on the site at the time so you can see a push notification before you see the red alert.

Also, if you have multiple push notifications they will display in a column, one above the other. I believe you will only get one for a reply to a watched thread even if others have replied after that one. They only appear for a certain number of seconds (I don't know the exact time but it's probably a minute or less then they disappear. When they display you can click on them to access the item it's notifying you of.

I've been wondering what 'push notifications' do.

But I don't see anything different.
I get the 'alerts' but don't see anything else relating to 'Push notifications'..
All the push option boxes are checkmarked but the blue 'Disable Push notification' bar is greyed out.

What does a 'push notification' look like?
A screen shot please.

You guys were too slow so I used a test account to send start a Personal Conversation with myself. Here's the screenshot of what it looks like.

But I don't see anything different.
I know you're using Firefox and with that browser there's a setting for allowing this type of notification. Go to the options page then click on Privacy and Security - scroll down to Permissions - Notification and click on the settings button on the right. Enter https://forums.techguy.org there and select "Allow" and then on Save Changes.

I, too, use FF and don't recall having to do anything to receive them, but I've slept since then ... ;-)

I did another test before posting my last message and if I remove that entry I no longer receive them and then when I enter it again they come back.

Did you check your setting Mark to see if there's an entry there?

Try it without the slash at the end.
