Running Windows XP Pro SP3 with all updates on Pentium Core 2 Duo NVidia board.

I'm finding TMP folders inside folders where I have files in long-term storage. I almost never use the files/programs in these storage folders. All the folder names begin with the same character, and then consist of 2 to 4 additional random characters then ending with .tmp.

    Examples:
    `18E5.tmp
    `1D08.tmp
    `21.tmp
    `2381.tmp
    `1D6.tmp
    `1F.tmp
    `6EC6.tmp

They appear to all contain duplicates of what was originally stored in the folder. Example: I may have a folder E:\Drivers\Intel\ver1. There may also be a phantom folder E:\Drivers\Intel\`2214.tmp. The `2214.tmp folder will contain a duplicate of what is in the ver1 folder.

    What is making these folders?

    How do I prevent it?
