For the vast majority of home users, Windows 7 Home Premium is the best choice.

If your computer doesn't support 4 GB or more of RAM, or if you don't plan to use 4 GB or more of RAM, the 32-bit version is what you want.

Are you planning to buy a new computer with Windows 7 pre-installed, or are you planning to upgrade a current computer from Windows XP or Windows Vista to Windows 7?

That's an older computer, so don't jump the gun too quick. The processor and amount of RAM should handle Windows 7 okay, but there's probably going to be a problem with getting Windows 7 drivers for all of its devices.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

What's then brand name, model name, and model number of that computer?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------

Go into the Device Manager, then click the + in

    Display Adapters

    Network Adapters

    Sound Video And Game Controllers

    What's listed in those headings?

I just discovered this thread you posted.

You've already installed Windows 7 Ultimate?

This is an opinion, but I'm very happy with Windows 7 Professional. I feel that in many ways, it culls the best of the other versions (like Location Aware Printing, Aero, etc), but it's still affordable. It's also easier to use for people who aren't savvy (like my mom). But again, that's just my opinion. You might find this helpful: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/business/windows-7-test-drive/

I didn't mean "older" in a derogatory way. I meant "older" in that there would probably be a device driver problem - which there is.

I was 99% sure that you would need to install a video card that's compatible with Windows 7.

I upgraded to Windows 7 in an older desktop and had to install a NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS video card to replace its integrated Intel graphics.

Frank- I believe we were working with a different computer there. There were 2 threads but another Mod merged the 2 into that one.

It's definitely confusing. I think one is already running 7 and one he is asking about what is best version.....

I thought we were working with the SAME computer. The same processor type and speed and amount of RAM are mentioned in both threads. I may be having a "senior moment". It's time to shut down for the night anyway. My brain and eyes and fingers all need a break.

Now I am wondering if there are different posters using the same account based on this comment

The poster made mistakes then, as it clearly stated in one thread he had XP and wanted 7

Then, the computer has 7....so I am not sure, but it appeared that he was asking about a different computer.

    Ah well, goodnight.
