I got this virus tonight..all of a sudden it just popped up. I ran My norton antivirus but it didnt even show me how to fix it. I dont know where to start and i didnt know what to do first because i didnt want to make it worse. It's called Trojan Adware.W32.Expdwnldr It keeps changing my backgrund to this red thing about getting spyware and ultimate cleaner, i keep getting pop-ups for the same thing too. I know other people have posted threads about this same virus but it seems like theyre so much further ahead than i am...i dont know where to begin. Please help!! thank you so much!!!

    Hi, Please first do this:

Let's have you post a log from Hijackthis and maybe we can spot anything out of place:
go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe
    • Scroll down a bit to see the File Repository area with a download button
    • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
    • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
    • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    • Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
If the HJT link above is not working, use this one:
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/HijackThis_d3155.html <it's the same thing.
Also, just after you get hijackthis moved or downloaded new, do this:
Open Hijack This and click on the Config button then on "Open the Misc Tools section" button. Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Click the "Save List" button. Copy and paste that list into your reply please.

Next: Let's have you try this removal tool >

If you have tried this program, please heed this advice>>>

This tool is updated very very frequently, and even if you downloaded it and used it Yesterday you must re----download a new copy for me and use the new one

    Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
    Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Before i got your reply i was kind of desperate to fix something, and after reading other threads i downloaded sdfix and did the whole safe mode thing. It seems to have helped but im not sure if everything is gone...so i continued with what you said...

Ill give you the sdfix report, hijackthis report, uninstall list, and the smit fraudfix report...thank you SO much for your help....i dont really know what ive fixed so anything you could help me with would be fabulous. The pop-ups have stopped however and my background is back to normal...my internet explorer homepage has changed from yahoo to msn for some reason but that isnt really a problem

    This is the sdfix report....

Hi, Your HJT log shows you have not applied ANY of the Service Packs for XP, SP1 or SP2....and, SP3 is almost out. Without these updates, your computer is very vulnerable to infection from the Web and you will have very little stopping any.

Is there some reason you have not installed these?

You do need a clean computer to install them, and I urge you to start as soon as we are finished here.

    Add/Remove Programs, Uninstall these:

New Media Codec v3.2 <<probably leftover non-functional, have it removed from the list (when you press Remove, you will get that message, OK it)

My Web Search (Smiley Central)<<minor nuiscance adware, these are optional if you use it, keep it.

My Websearch Toolbar or similar....> remove .

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2<< this is a very outdated version of the Java Plugin, vulnerable to trojan Vundo, do what is below to get the newest version

Go to HERE and download the latest version of java, it's the Java Runtime Environment 6.0,
    the fourth download down.
Once you have, Uninstall all the older versions
of Java JRE you see in Control Panel> Add/Remove Programs and install the new.

Run the second part of SmitFraudFix:

Copy these steps to a Notepad text file and save it as steps.txt to your desktop, or print them, as you will not be able to get online while working in Safe Mode (and, please do
not use Safe Mode with Networking for this fix!)

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
    • Choose your usual account.
Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

(Meaning, you may have to reset your wallpaper/background picture)

A reccommended step is to also run an online antimalware scan, these can pick up spyware/adware as well as trojans/virii so a full scan is always part of our help here.

Choose one of these scanners below, and post the results it gives you as it shows you.

    HERE to run Panda's ActiveScan
    • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
    • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    • Enter your Country
    • Enter your State/Province
    • Enter your e-mail address and click send
    • Select either Home User or Company
    • Click the big Scan Now button
    • If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    • When download is complete, click on My Computer to start the scan
    • When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location. Post the contents of the ActiveScan report

Or this one: Kaspersky online full scan
    • Please go HERE and click Kaspersky Online Scanner
    • Read and Accept the Agreement
    • You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
    • If you see a Windows dialog asking if you want to install this software, click the Install button.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files,
    • When the "Update progress" line changes to "Ready" and the "NEXT ->" button becomes available, please click on it.
    • Click on the Scan Settings button, and in the next window select the Extended database, and click Ok.
    • Under "Please select a target to scan:", click My Computer to start the scan.
    • When the scan is finished, click the "Save as Text" button, and save the file as kavscan.txt to your Desktop, close the Kaspersky On-line Scanner window.
    • Copy and Paste the contents of the on line scanner results into a Reply here in your thread, along with a new HJT log and log from any other scans you run.

Post a new Hijackthis log after doing the above.
