Hello Kandy:

You may have so suspicious stuff hiding in your system. Let's have a look inside. Download HijackThis and run it. Without trying to fix anything, create a log and paste it here for study.

P.S. Actually "splitting" your hard drive into two separate partitions is quite all right. In fact, you can save all your files on D: and if your windows on C: ever becomes corrupt and have to reinstall it, all your personal files will be safe on D:.

Hello again:

You did great. The log is exactly posted as it should be! (y)

And you are also right. It's best to tackle one problem at a time.

I am no pro but give me a bit of time and I will go over your log and see if there's anything that shouldn't be there...:)

Thank you and no rush. All help appreciated. And no need to be a pro some people just know bits and pieces and when they all get together then bigger problems can be solved.

Ok I think I found something bad.

Run HijackThis again and check off these items for it to fix:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\evntsvc.exe -osboot

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CreateCD50] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adaptec Shared\CreateCD\CreateCD50.exe" -r

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AdaptecDirectCD] "C:\Program Files\Adaptec\Easy CD Creator 5\DirectCD\DirectCD.exe"

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QTTASK.EXE" -atboottime

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CriticalUpdate] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\wucrtupd.exe -startup

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! Pager] C:\PROGRAM FILES\YAHOO!\MESSENGER\ypager.exe -quiet

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\MSN Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [HXDL.EXE] C:\Program Files\Cosmi\HelpExpress\HXDL.EXE -from="HXIUL.EXE" -to="HXIUL.EXE" -run

O4 - Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE

O4 - Startup: ATnotes.lnk = C:\Program Files\ATnotes\ATnotes.exe

O4 - Startup: reminder-ScanSoft Product Registration.lnk = C:\Program Files\ScanSoft\PaperPort\Config\Ereg\REMIND32.EXE

As you can see, some of this, Like Microsoft Office, is totally legit but you don't need them starting with Windows because they are resource hogs. Start them manually only and if you need them.

Have HijackThis fix the items above, reboot then post another fresh log here.

I did not however delete the DirectCD, CreateCD, Yahoo or ATNotes as I do want those started. I did notice however that now when I went to where I saved the program for the log that there are back up files now and quite a few of them have the funny icon that when you click asks you what program to use to open them. What is up with this?

Sorry, I don't understand this. Do the bakup files have names and/or extensions?

Also, has the original problem been fixed. Because you now have a clean log.
