After way too long a time on dialup, I've now taken advantage of my apartment complex's wireless ethernet network. I installed the wireless PCI card, and now I have wireless access.

Are there any additional security threats associated with being on a network like this? I have updated anti-virus software, but nothing like a firewall (as far as I know). If I don't explicitly share anything on the network, are there still ways my system could be compromised?

    Thanks.

Thanks for the advice. On this very forum, I've heard that ZoneAlarm isn't very compatible with XP. Anyone use ZA with Windows XP?

I've been using it with XP and haven't had any problems.

Wouldn't know about XP compatibility. At least make sure you have your XP firewall in use. From what I understand, it's effective for keeping things from reaching out to touch you, but not effective for any nasties you may have, or get, from trying to contact the mother ship.

There's other, good, free FW's you can check out:

Scroll down some to find the links.

Also, good site to check out whatever FW you're using:
