What does the attached symbol mean and how do I view pages when this symbol appears?
One of the websites I need to visit is for my work and I need to view this page to see my online paystub.

It's a placeholder for an image that isn't being displayed. Either because it didn't download, or because you have the browser set to not display images.

If the image simply didn't download, you probably can't. However, if your browser is set to not show images, you would notice more missing images than this, so it is probably the former. To check the browser settings would vary with the browser. Which browser do you use? Have you tried another browser?

It's probably a pdf which needs Acrobat Reader. Do you have that installed?

Open the Reader, go into edit, preferences, internet and un-check the box that says Display PDF in browser.

That didn't fix the problem. I even updated the reader but that did no good.

Try right clicking on the item and if it has properties left click and check it out. Could you make the image larger than it is and repost it?

When I try and test the below player I get the symbol:
    Macromedia Authorware Web Player
I have no problem with any other shock wave movies.

If the top player works, then your shockwave player is working. If the player under this doesn't work, you need to install flash player.
    Install the Flash Player.
