Before you consider installing Windows XP on new hardware, you need to be very sure that the hardware is compatible with Windows XP and that Windows XP drivers can be obtained for all of the devices in the computer.

Windows XP can be installed in VirtualBox without requiring special drivers. But you need a licensed copy.

Microsoft still have a free download that will run XP in their own free Virtual PC program running on Windows 7.

Virtual PC :- https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8002

XP Mode :- https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=3702

At the links click on the + signs to get more details.

Make sure you get the 32 or 64 bit version of Virtual PC that matches your Windows 7 install. Running the download will install a large Windows Update containing the Virtual PC program.

I use Virtual PC2007 running under Vista Ultimate at home, and also under Windows 7 in my court reporting office. We installed Windows XP in the Windows 7 machine, but I installed only Windows 98 DOS in the Vista PC, so I could run old WordPerfect DOS 5.1. Archaic but we need it for business purposes.
