OK, just for conversation, if anyone was to get a new desktop, would you get it at Dell? Sam's Club (HP), etc? What manufacturer has the best home systems? Also, I hear a lot of bad stuff about Vista, can you still buy systems with XP?

Stick with XP for a faster more user friendly OS. Search for brands or stores that offer this service.

XP will only be available from OEM's until 30 June. As far as Vista having problems, you get from it what you expect.
If all you are going to do is web surf and e-mail, Vista will suit yoru needs very well and is more secure than XP. If you have a lot of legacy programs that you KNOW will not run on Vista, then you either need to get the updated version of that program or stick with XP.
If you plan to go the Vista route, make sure you get nothing less than 2 gigs of RAM.
