I haven't been happy with AVG 2012, it took forever to scan my computer while slowing it right down and sometimes it would freeze. Do you know if the 2013 version is a better version than 2012? Also I am interested in knowing what other options are out there for free internet security software? There are so many to choose from but knowing which is best or better would be greatly appreciated. (y) Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

    Security isn't my area but...

From what I have heard on here from people who know much about security is that AVG is not what it once was.

Personally, I use Linux so I do not have to worry so much about security (although you do still need an AV - it's just you have to worry about it less). However, if you are not willing to take the plunge then there are some great free tools out there:

    1. Microsoft Security Essentials: It's OK. Nice and light weight and integrated BUT the virus search is slow and a bit rubbish. The detector isn't great but it's not awful.

    2. Malware Bytes: IMHO the best Virus scanner out there. It is a little bit over-keen at times (it might think that a cookie requires nuclear bomb style obliteration) but better that than the opposite. The free version does not come with protection.

    3. Spybot Search and Destroy: Best Anti-Spy out there that is free. Does both protection AND scanning. Nice and fast and always picks up stuff you never knew you had. Combine it with Ad-Block for your browser

4: I have also heard good things about Comodo.

Unless you run mission critical stuff on your PC (hold customer files, Government stuff etc) IMO, most folk can use a combination of free software and be safe (and often safer) compared to proprietary software.

Hopefully, someone with a bit more AV knowledge can back this up and add to it

Thanks so much for your input. Yes I have also heard good things about Spybot so might weigh that up as one of my options. I definitely don't think I will stay with AVG, am so over it :)

Thank you. So which one would you suggest out of Superantispyware and Malwarebytes?
