I wanted to get a firewall program for my laptop and I'm currently using a 30 day free trial version of Zone Alarm. But I also know there are other similar programs out there like Black Ice and McAfee. I have heard that some are more "user friendly" than others, but I can pretty much work with anything. Does anyone have any personal recommendations any one of these firewall programs or generally which program the computer industry relies on most? I'm guessing that they're all pretty much the same, just not really too sure...Thanks

My biased opinion is to stick with Zone Alarm's basic version or even better, their Pro version. I believe that both McAfee and BlackIce have good firewall products as well, but it seems to me many users you find on forums tend to like ZoneAlarm.

Like many software products, you will get a wide range of opinions. But I can say this, I've never heard of ZA failing to do what it is configured to do. ;)

I had BlackIce back at home and I really didn't like it. It interfered with me updating my computer in the simplest ways. It is the only firewall program I've ever tried, so I don't know what else is out there, just pointing out that BlackIce was problematic to me.

I have tried BlackIce, Zone Alarm and Nortons.

BlackIce used to be a great product, until I had some problems with it and Windows XP.

Most of Symantec's products are trash in my opinion, so I wouldn't reccomend that.

I used to use Zone Alarm on a few PCs, and it did the job, but slowed down my PC considerably....

My best advice would be a router...you can get a good Linksys for as cheap as $50 if you look around. :)

I believe Hardware Firewall solutions are best but I have used Sygate Personal Firewall without any problems :

I recommend Sygate Personal Firewall v5.1.Thats my preference....Kerio Personal 2 is very good also.Zone Alarm also provides good protection.Stay away from Black Ice if possible.

I don't think there is an expiry for Zone Alarm as there is with certain time restricted trialware. At least I use Sygate Free Version and its never expired nor have I received any nag screens.

Norton Firewall is very good, I also have used Freedom which is a little tedious in cofiguration but OK. My IT specialist laughs at the suggestion of ZoneAlarm as being any good.

By far the Sygate Firewall is the best to use. That is the only thing that I will run in all my systems. And it has the highest award rating out there. And to this date , There is no record of it being hacked thru, or letting Trojans or worms into your system. And there is five different tests that you can run with it also, including one for trojans.
And you can download their Free personal firewall, and register it , and use it for life to. And they will automatically keep it updated for you also.
Just go to Http://www.sygate.com and check it out for yourself. I have had people to tell me in the past, they they were having a lot of problems with the zone alarm, and black ice letting to many nasties in off the net.
I Hope that this helps out. :)

Thanks for the tips everyone....I decided to go with Sygate now...I'm using their 30 day trial version now. After that I'll probably just switch to the free version. Seems to have pretty much all the same security features as the pay version, except for a little less security options. Seems good to me still, so thanks

    My two cents:

A word to the wise. A person can do themself and their firewall a big favor if they totally uninstall any previous firewalls before installing a new one. Even when jumping back and forth to different firewalls it's a good idea to do a thorough uninstall before jumping to the next one.
Some firewalls are notorious for leaving bits and pieces laying around and in some circumstances those bits and pieces can cause conflict.

This is always a huge debate. I think mostly based on "bad" experiences rather than good. So........I'll throw mine in too. I have used BlackIce Defender for more than 2 years with no trouble at all. It always tests well at the on-line evaluation sites. It is a 2 way firewall, meaning it stops "phone home" type programs and any thing that may get in by the users hand from getting OUT. This is especially handy with an "always on" connection.

As far as ZoneAlarm goes..........I absolutely HATE it. It caused me huge problems about 2 years ago. I called my cable ISP(not knowing yet what the problem was) and as I discribed the problem and circumstances to him. After about a week installed it just blocked outbound traffic totally. The first thing he said to my was "You're screwed, you may fight with this for a while, but I'll tell you now ........You WILL end-up formating your drive to get it fixed" I had my friend (he's the IT guy where I work) come to look at it for me. We went through everything to try to get IE out to the internet. We even installed a different browser after uninstalling ZA to try to get out. That didn't work either. All known traces of ZA were removed. I even reinstalled ZA trying to get it to work like "new" and nothing worked. So after many attempts to repair it.............Format did the trick, just like the RoadRunner tech guy said in the first place. I was, I'll admit, the free download version and the Pro may be better but ..........

Oh Berndawg, the other good thing about sygate is that once you download it, That is all you need to do. It comes preset for Most all home pc's that is the other good thing about it. and It will ask you if you want it updated automatically, say yes to that. And U can just forget about it after that. It will do everything else for you. Dont you just love modern technology:D
And you do have great taste as far as firewalls go Starman!!!.:(y) They say that great minds think alike, you know lol. :D
And Zeddy Your IT Specialist, aint the only ones laughing at zone alarm. lOL. :p
And Alaska thanks for bringing that good point up. That , just like your Virus Scanner, needs to be uninstalled(the old) b4 installing the new. Or else your (0r at least mine anyways)will yell at you. LOL. :)heehee.:d
But you got to love these things you know. LOL Even tho they do get Sassy at times .LOL :D ( computers that is LOL ) And my cat too lol.
