I'd go with a HP .. I think the support is better.
I'd stay away from a Slimline .. They're not as Upgradeable.
Used to be .. the small slimline case had heat problems.

I'd go for the HP Slimline s5730f even though I hate the slimline cases-but I like the Phenom II processor. IMO 4GB of RAM is a must so I wouldn't choose either of the $300 models, but if you're OK with 2GB to start, go with the HP. You can add more RAM later & HP is, IMO, much better quality than eMachines.

I've not had any bad experiences with Acer but I've never worked on their desktop boxes so I don't know that my experience is relevant here. Assuming it is, and that you opt for less than the $460 model, I'd go with the Acer AX3400G-U4802. Way more HD space than you'll probably need (based on your described use) but it's got a decent CPU, enough RAM, and fair graphics. Another opinion-I think the integrated Intel graphics that are so common in budget PC's with Intel processors simply aren't up to the job when it comes to graphical interfaces like Windows 7, which is why I prefer AMD processors at that end. Not that the processors are better, but they seem to come with better graphics. When (rarely) you find an Intel processor with decent graphics in that price range it's worth considering-but I didn't see that among these.

    I'd recommend this one:

    Compared to the HP one,
it has a greater GHz on the CPU (3.1GHz per core apposed to 2.8GHz) and more HDD space :)

They're the only two in the $400 range with 4 GB RAM, as I didn't want to recommend any from the $460 range.

What would be handy is knowing what type of graphics cards come with these machines as your using them to watch TV / games ...

Thanks everyone that took time to reply

    I went and ordered the

Acer Black AX3400G-U4802 Desktop PC with AMD Athlon II X2 Dual-Core 255 Processor and Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) AMD Athlon II X2 Dual-Core 255 Processor1TB hard drive with 4GB memoryWindows 7 Home Premium (64-bit)
    Model#: AX3400G-U4802]

because at $400 it was closer to a $300 budget i wanted to keep in buying a new computer.

Negative:It appears the Acer computer was specially made for Walmart, which made me somewhat nervous .Goggle 'dell' 'walmart 'lawsuit' for why.
Positive: i noticed today the computer was 'out of stock'
