because the mac uses 8 inch floppy drives and the pc uses 3.5 inch floppy drives and as i'm sure you'll understand you cant fit the 8 inch floppy drive into the 3.5 inch floppy drive so clearly there is no way you can use either computers software in either computers floppy drives so if you need to put apples quicktime onto a pc you have to use a specialist firm to migrate the program from an 8 inch floppy to a 3.5 inch floppy and this is very expensive so most apple users and pc users stick to there own operating systems as the cost of transfering 200 megabytes onto floppys would be far to expensive when they could just go out a buy the other computer and then they have one of each and dont need to goto the man who transfers the data from the eight inch floppy to the 3.5 inch floppy

The differences have nothing to do with the floppy disks. In a nutshell ( any h/w expert can give more specifics then me for sure) , it comes down to the cpu. Microsoft software is based upon intel(ahhh and AMD) x86 chip and apple upon motorolla chip. Software isn't compatible across the two unless I suppose a powerpc system which I am very much a novice at.

As a matter of fact, the floppies used can be the same, there are no 8" floppies, but nonetheless, this is not the matter at hand.

There is no reason WHY they are not compatable, They just are not they are each a different OS (operating system) on slightly different hardware. Apples and oranges. They speak different languages, one might say.
