I click on Start/My Computer/Control Panel. The screen goes momentarily to the blank background screen, then all the icons and tool bar show back up--but no control panel opens. I am running Windows XP on a Dell computer. Please help. THANKS!

    Sue

There are several viruses/trojans out there that disable control panel. I'd check that first. Download HijackThis and post a log for the security guys to look at.. If that's not the problem then we'll work on Windows.. You can go here to download HJT if you don't have it. http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?action=tpmod;dl=item5

OK, I downloaded HJT and posted the log on the website you gave me. Or did you mean I should post it on this website--and if so, which forum??

p.s. I went ahead and posted the HJT log on this website. No one is responding to me on the other one.

    Thanks,
    Sue

Does anyone know how to remove a partial install of "windows one care live"? After the install which did not finish, I cannot open control panel to remove it! It shows a blank white screen, when I click on control panel. I wanted to go to the add or remove programs. The programs are not listed, only a white screen. Then one other time when it did show what was in control panel, I clicked on add or remove and nothing would happen or open.
    Thanks smerfs

If that doesn't help ...Try this ....

    IMPORTANT __ Backup your registry

    Go To Start >>> Run >> regedit /e c:\registrybackup.reg

    --------------------------------------
Restoring missing icons from control panel

    Start >> run >> regedit

    navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called 'ForceClassicControlPanel' and edit the value according to the settings (0 = force new, 1 = force classic).

Restart your computer and check ...

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\don't load

Look in the right pane and you'll see disabled Control Panel Icons. Right click on the "don't load" subkey and select Delete to restore all disabled icons.

    Regards
    DH
