Why is bandwidth so expensive?

    This is something I've never understood. Why is bandwidth so expensive? Don't you just buy a part of the internet backbone through a major ISP and then bandwidth is provided for you at a set fee like dsl/cable/t1?

    No, the ISP buys it and sells it to you that's why it is so spensive. It is far less expensive than it used to be and will probably get cheaper.

    Actually, relatively speaking, bandwidth is fairly inexpensive these days. ;)

    Well... in all seriousness, I haven't looked at prices lately, but I would imagine they are making their way done there. I get over half a T3 to myself from my school, so it must be getting reasonable if they can afford to give out so much bandwidth to students.

    I'm getting 3.5 MB down for $35 and my ISP just started a new offer: for an extra $10 they guarantee me 5 MB down and 1 MB up... AOL 56K dial-up here costs almost $25 so bandwidth costs depends on the ISP.
