Im defragging today after defragging yesterday just to keep up on things....however.....after defragging yesterday (which took 6 hrs) it is defragging today and taking 2 hrs plus still running? does my computer have a virus? i have 138gb with 38 gb free. It is a fairly new laptop ive only had 2 years...
Depending on the settings, a defrag can take just as many hours to complete if it is done soon after another one, or it can take just a few minutes.
Vista does its defragging automatically, on a schedule, so manual ones are not really needed.
But you may want to try a different defragger. It really doesn't matter which you use since they all do the job. One with a boot-time defrag may be advisable, but not crucial. But just be sure to use only one (and turn off Vista's scheduled defrags) because even though they all do a good job, they may use different placement strategies. If you have 2 working against one another, you don't ever make any progress.
Something like "Magical Defrag" works in the background all the time and defrags whenever the machine is idle. Others can be set to defrag whenever the screensaver is active.
There is little advantage in using Safe Mode in Vista since the VSS allows defrags of even most files that are in use.
Sorry to spoil your post Elvandil but the boot time Defrag function of O&O Defrag Pro (Not sure if the Freeware version has Boot time Defrag) When used on a system that has windows vista usually leads to a corrupt and sometimes completely unbootable OS. I haven't checked for any documentation regarding this issue which occurred repeatedly for me on numerous systems (Using O&O Defrag Pro 8.5)
I just thought I would throw this Info up just for sake of warning, I will check for Some documentation regarding this matter if wanted.
***EDIT*** Okay, Ignore what I said... because it appears that O&O Defrag 8.5 is as out of date as disco's and sideways flared trousers and apparently I'm the only person here stupid enough to use such seriously out of date software on vista.
But here is my suggestion; (because it's what I use nowadays anyway without issue)
I use O&O on all my Vista machines. I'm using version 11 and certainly wouldn't use something as old as 8.5 in Vista. I was not aware that there had been any problems, and have not had any myself. But due to changes in the boot process and partition configuration, the latest release of any system software should be used and it should say specifically that it is Vista-compatible.
Yeah, I kind of jumped into that mess a while ago without giving it much thought and things quickly went hairy...Hence why I now use the Gnu Defragger that I linked too. I used to love O&O pro, (Especially it's Defrag screensaver) whats v11 like?
***EDIT***
Just for the record, for anyone else who may read this Post. It's better and much easier to listen to the advice that Elvandil has given;
"the latest release of any system software should be used"
It seems like the pay versions of defraggers all begin to look alike. O&O looks a lot like DiskKeeper. Maybe a few more options. But the "Stealth" defragging setting is a really good one. It keeps things neat and you never know it is running. There's that good feature that I liked in DiskKeeper, too, the screensaver. For people who use them, it's a great option, to be able to get defragging done when the machine is idle.
