    Hi,
I am using my laptop with its os being windowsXp. I insert my thumbdrive into the usb slot and I could see my thumbdrive from windows explorer.
But if the laptop remains inactive after some time, and , at the window explorer, when I click on the 'removable disk' (my thumbdrive), it prompt me to format my thumbdrive. So in order to see my thumbdrive again, I need to unplug and plug the thumbdrive into my laptop.

What must I do so that the thumbdrive will always be seen by my laptop even though the laptop is inactive.

    Thanks

Go into device Manager, Universal Serial Bus Controllers, and for each USB Root Hub, see if the power saving entry is checked. If so, try unchecking it, see if that helps.

    Hi JohnWill,
Thanks for your reply. I did according to your instruction and I have uncheck the power saving entry of all the USB root hub (4 altogether) but the problem is still there. Each time after inactivity, and when i want to access my thumbdrive, my laptop computer system says "the disk in drive G is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?"

So what must I do so that my thumb drive remains there even after inactivity.

    Thanks

When you say your laptop is "inactive" is it going into hibernation or standby?

It sounds like the USB drivers may be dying in their sleep, but in a laptop they should not be. I would be tempted top refresh the motherboard drivers, which may help.

Please note this is not the BIOS (leave that well alone).

If we knew the laptop make and model we could point you to the drivers.
