Will a motherboard that will run Phenom also run Phenom II?

It most propably won't. You will at least need a BIOS update. Actually it will. :O
Go here: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us search for your motherboard, choose WinXP (or any other, as it doesn't even matter), choose BIOS [BIOS history], choose the latest, 1001, BIOS, download. Then... I'm not sure, but you might need a floppy drive to update the BIOS, though some newer board can be done with a USB drive.

Should not be a problem. Just remember to update your bios before you do the cpu swap. Once done with the update, restart and then fully shutdown the system. Do the cpu swap and clear cmos or as asus calls it RTC with the clear jumper. Replace jumper to the keep position. Pw ON and enter the bios. Set time, date, and boot order/device. Set any other parameters as necessary. Save settings and restart.

You should be good to go.
