I have a old 5 button mouse which I want to connect to a new PC. The mouse is PS2 and the PC only has USB ports. Will the mouse work is I get a PS2/USB convertor?

The info file on the floppy with the mouse drivers says:
PS2 and Serial Mouse Setup INF file for Win9x/NT40
USB Wheel 5 Button Mouse for Win98

but there is no more mention of USB in the file.

    Be careful.

The PS2 mouse will only work with a USB converter if the mouse electronics support it, and while many do, it's not universal.

Mice that support it usually ship with the converter.

That should work OK in most cases Noyb.

I was referring to the simple USB/PS2 converter "plug" that ships with many mice and keyboards, I have seen many people try and use them with mice or keyboards not designed for them, and wonder why they will not work.

Yes - I have one of those also.
Since they're so simple - I'm thinking the only difference between USB and PS2 is the connector.
Thus - No "electronic conversion" is required ... but I'm probably wrong.

They simply reroute the connectiions, the 5v power is the same.

But the protocols for USB differ and unless the mouse or keyboard is appropriately designed electronically they just shake their heads and say "don't understand".
