I acquired an HP Pavilion 700 without a hard drive. I connected an 80gig hd and switched on. The fan
ran for about thirty seconds then switched itself off. Any ideas.

Ok, cpu fan turning off could be a couple of things.

    Bad mobo. (motherboard)
    Bad power supply
    Short against the case.

Depending on your level of computer experience, I would start by disassembling, and set the mobo up OUTSIDE the case.

If things are worse than I think, you'll have to remove the mobo from the case anyway, so, may as well start at the lowest level.

I'm assuming you don't have a history of the machine to begin with? And the reason they removed the hard drive, could have been that was the only working component?
