Yes, it should work. PCI-e is backward and forward compatible although you won't get the benefit of any newer improvements in the PCI-Express spec such as faster bandwidth that PCI-e 2.x can deliver but the card will still work an perform near its full potential.

Make sure you have a quality 300 watt PSU or better though for the GT 440 and a 400 watt or better for the Radeon HD 5670.

A review with both cards: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/GeForce_GT_440/1.html

Installing drivers is not required until you get a picture from the output of the new video card. Have you checked in the BIOS that the PCI-Express(PEG) is selected as the primary graphics card? You must also have the monitor connected to the card before you turn on the PC. Make sure the card is seated correctly too.

What power supply did you buy?

ECS boards, especially older ones, have a bad reputation. This could be a compatibility issue with this board and this ATI generation of cards. Can you exchange the card for an nVidia brand card?

Never heard of Mercury, please be aware that there are hundreds of power supply makers that make extremely poor and unsafe power supplies that usually end up causing user's many problems when they do no work properly or when they fail.
