my 14 y.o son is looking to build a gaming rig (his 1st build) and curious if its worth installing win 8 or if there are any reasons to stick with 7 instead. hopefully those who have used win 8 can enlighten me.

honestly its probably not going to make a difference in gaming or performance. its all the usability. especially if hes building a gaming rig, itll need to be powerful, Im running windows 8 on an older laptop, it runs as good as windows 7 did on the same setup. So in terms of it being worth it, if you already have 7 but were wanting to go buy 8, just use 7 for now. Windows 7 probably has more compatibility than 8 does for older games, I cant really say for sure because I have a separate partition with windows 2003 to play my older games.

I'm dual booting Windows 7 and Windows 8 on a Dell Inspiron 580. Each has its own hard drive. From the comparisons I've done and my personal evaluation, there's no noticable difference. I prefer Windows 7. Ars Technica ran a number of benchmarks that put some numbers on things.
