win 98 problem

Don in New Orleans. My sister was using MSN for internet. Had problems. wanted to swich to AOL. Deleted all MSN software and loaded AOL CD. When AOL looked for a modem it can't find it, and system freezes up. System is 800MHZ 128MB Ram WIn 98.
Can you help?

Welcome to TSG.

You need to check to see whats happening with the modem.

Right click the My Computer icon or her desktpop, select properties, then the Device Manager tab. Look for Modem, click the +, should list the modem that is installed. If there is an excalamation mark the modem driver has issues and will need to be updated or reinstalled.
Highlight it and click properties, then driver, then driver file details. From there you can update/reinstall driver.

if no modem is listed in the device manager, then try add new hardware wizard, if that does not find it then use add new hardware wizard in manual mode and specify the modem. Once the modem is in place update the drivers either from manufacturers site ( prefffered) or use windows update utility ( should run this regularly if it is not set to auto run )
