Hi,

SYMTRAY.EXE is not your System tray, for that's Systray.exe.

Symtray.exe is your Norton System Works System Tray icon.

I'd start by disabling Crash Guard, and stopping it loading automatically, for it causes more crashes than it prevents.
It's just not worth it.

Go into the options of NSW, and remove the check mark at 'Start Crash Guard as Windows starts' or something similar.

See whether Symtray continues to crash.

If it does, uninstall and reinstall System Works.

Good luck,

1st thing i would do is get rid of crash gaurd its garbage.
nothing will stop a crash, see if after you remove it if you still crash.

if you research forums about crash gaurd nothing but problems:eek:

I'm not as smart as the other guys but this is what I would do.
First disconnect crash guard, then use your system file checker, type "SFC" scan for altered files. You can replaced missing files by exacting files from Win 98 CD or your hard drive folder
"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM".

If you have a Windows repair feature in System Information Ultility, use it. Goto start, run, type in "MSInfo32" and this will bring up the screen. Select tools, then internet explorer repair tool. Follollow prompts, self explanatory. This will ensure that you have your windows files intact.

Next option, disconnect a couple of programs at a time to isolate the problem, restart, check again, until you find the specific program that is causing the problem.

Another way would be to uncheck all of the programs in the Start Up menu in the System Config Ultility and restart Windows. If the problem goes away, then its caused by one of the programs.

If nothing else this exercise will familiarize you with some of the tools in Windows 98.

BRITISH,
SymTray is an application (or whatever) that groups all your Norton System Works things into one tray icon. When you hover the mouse over it it displays the individual apps (Antivirus, Crashguard, CleanSweep etc).
I was cleaning up my startup progs with msconfig and discovered this there, since I only run NAV, why have it running?
Anyhow, what I would do is uninstall all of Norton System Works. Check if it still happens and if not reinstall Norton.
Hope this helps....
I agree CrashGuard is junk.
