Help, I have Win 98 2nd Edition and it is not recognising a USB Hardware transcribing footpedal. The pedal does not have any specific driver, I believe it runs off windows. In the hardware manager, under HID, there is a yellow exclamation mark. I assume this is a warning that it cannot find the driver. I do not know. Someone help please

    Welcome to the forum.

I don't think WIN98 supports USB - certainly with all USB devices on my 98 machine I have had to install drivers - I think you will need to download a driver for your divice.

Maybe somebody else could jump in and confirm.

When I try to update drivers, it directs me to WIndows CD, which even though is in the drive, cannot find some files (can't remember which ones though). The software is mean to support all the bits and peices, and it does on an XP equipped machine, but if the computer is not recognising the hardware, the software certainly aint either.

My other machine uses XP and you are right - you invariably don't need to install a driver but I have found that with Win98se you do.

If you post as much detail as you can about your device we may be able to find a driver for it.

    98se does support USB.

    SBA,

what I would do is the following

1> goto control panel, systems, devices, and look down there to see if you have a USB device installed, if its there and not working, you'll see an exclmation mark, if so, remove it, if it is not there that is your problem.

2> check in you BIOS that USB devices are enabled

3> I think your installation software shoould then try and find or install the USB. If is asks for the windows cd, you need to point it to where everyour CD is D: example, and I think the folder is something like /win98/cab

    so the folder is d:/win98se/cab

    that should do the trick

The hardware is there and so is the exclamation mark. I have tried deleting it, but when I re-boot, it appears again and so does the exclamation. How do I check me bios to see if USB is enabled?

Tried again to remove it and when it asks for win98 cd, it looks but cannot find the following files:
    hidclass.sys
    hidparse.sys
    hidusb.sys
Is that any help for anyone?
