Over the years, I've always used the "System Configuration Utility-> Start"
tab in Windows 98 to remove installed stuff I dont want to run at
    start up etc.

I've noticed all these postings around here listing various info and
programs that start in Win XP, but I dont know how to go about it
myself. Anyone any hints/tip/websites for this XP newbie? :)

    Hi-

Go to Start: Run: and type msconfig.... under the startup tab you can uncheck any programs you don't want to run at startup.

As far as windows services... go here: http://www.blkviper.com/index.html

He lists all services running in Winxp and which ones can be safely disabled.
