I just started installing windows xp sp3 on my friends crappy old laptop Compaq 6715s.

The file 'asms' on Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD is needed.
Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.
Copy files from: GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolume3\I386

I found few posts on google where people had the same issue. I tried everything, changing "GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolume3" part to d:,f: ..
Then i woundered why i need to search for right letter if i can use cmd. I opened cmd and there i found that system doesnt detect usb flash. It shows only C:, E: (partiton 2) and F: (Cd rom).

This laptop has only 2 usb ports, i switched between them like 20 times. I still dont get whats the problem.
Please help me :(

HDD is formated there is no os on that laptop right now
What exactly are you using and how are you trying to install Windows XP Professional SP3 in that HP Compaq 6715s laptop?

Depending on which part/product number(P/N) is on it and which Windows version is on its COA sticker, it originally came with Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista Home Basic or Windows Vista Business.

Computer came with Windows Vista Home Basic.
(But there was windows xp installed when i started installing a new copy)
Im using USB Flash to intall windows, i installed .iso image on it using Rufus.
I started laptop, pressed F9 for boot menu and switched to USB Flash.
Everything is fine, setup runs but then it shows error like this

only in D:\I386 place there is GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolume3\I386 , cause im installing from usb.
But i still dont think that there is problem in installation, i think computer just doesnt detect flash while in installation..

I'm only familiar with doing a clean install of Windows XP with its disc, so someone else will need to help you.
