Hi, I'm stumped as to why Explorer crashes whenever I try to view properties on any of my network connections. Its quite possible that I've messed something up in one of many tweaks. I just don't know when it happened.

The event viewer shows the following error:

"Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.2649, faulting module msvcrt.dll, version 7.0.2600.2180, fault address 0x00037e9f."

Is it possible to re-install just the networking components for WinXP, or do I have to do a full fresh install?

Hello & Welcome to Tech Guy Forum.

Which version of Windows XP are you running? Which SP?

Thanks for providing the event viewer information.

Any chance you could perform a system restore?

"I just don't know when it happened."
Do you mean the problem began hours, days, weeks, or months ago?

Which tweaks did you perform?
Tip: Keep track of the onset of problems; of tweaks & changes to your system.
Often, but NOT always, there is a cause & effect.

To answer your question, "Yes". Please see:

You might want to look at this article, also.
http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/thread-243421.php

start > run
delete box to the right of "open"
type: cmd
press "enter"
type: cd\
press "enter"
You will be at "C:\>

"run each of these commands at a command prompt

regsvr32 netshell.dll
regsvr32 netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 netman.dll
regsvr ole32.dll

Wait for notice that action has been performed, before entering next command.
Press "enter" after typing each command.
When finished, type: exit
Press "enter"

And then reboot. See if the problem still exists. Could
you also try following the support link that is in
the '1001' error message, you will probably be able to
find out more than I can by doing this. "

Thanks for trying to help out.

Which version of Windows XP are you running? Which SP?
WINXP PRO SP2

Any chance you could perform a system restore?
No

Do you mean the problem began hours, days, weeks, or months ago?
I only noticed the problem recently whilst trying to setup my lan connection to connect to a switch instead of directly to the cable modem.
The last time I remember having messing around with network settings was when trying to setup a wireless connection, which ended in failure I believe and I vaguely recall having the same crash after messing with the network then. I have since uninstalled the wireless drivers. Perhaps something to do with it.

Which tweaks did you perform?
I honestly couldn't tell you them all sorry I don't keep notes. Various interface tweaks, deactivating system restore, disabling a few services, changing the number half-open connections, and a few more.

I tried those suggestions from the other thread to no effect.
I'm seriously considering doing a fresh install, its a pain but probably not a bad time to do it.

Thanks but I've given up on trying to fix the problem with that install. Have done a fresh install and all is well.
