win xp no sound

    have a win xp acer notebook. afiter installing itunes, if I try to play a cd or dvd, they will not play (cd spins but no sound comes out), and an error mesage shows up on win media player " win media player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. there miht not be a sound device installed on your computer." if I check under "sound and audio device " properties, uder volume tab , it says "no audio device", under audio tab it says "default device: no playback devices". In the bios, there is nothing listed to be able to enable/disable. uninstalled itunes, did a regedit, cleaned out all itune stuff, went to realtek , downloaded ac97 driver, installed,, still no audio device listed, and same error mesage. tried a system restore, to no avail. Went in to administrative tools, component services, services,and under windows audio, it says "status: started" and "startup type: automatic" The computer still beeps etc, just won't play sound from cd's or dvd's. how can I reinstall this audio device? Thank you

    What does it show in the Device manager under Sound, Video, and Game Controllers...is anything should not working properly or just plain disabled there?

    Unfortunately there are many with this problem and no help seems to be available! However you get to this point or whatever causes it...it seems to cause quite a headache and not much in terms of a solution beyond checking the obvious. I've done EVERYTHING my self to solve the issue and guaranteed, nothing will work!!! I wish you best of luck...i threw mine in the garbage today because of this problem...spent hours and hours for a week with absolutely no solution or advice beyond the obvious and usual troubleshooting. Hope you get yours to work!
