hi, i ran into a problem while upgrading win 98 to win xp. here's what happened. I stuck in the win xp pro to upgrade then it quit near competion. what i want to do is undo the partial install and revert back to original win 98 and keep the files intact. i know what i did is stupid, the hard drive doesn't have enough space, its only a 6 gig, they're office files and i hate to lose them. can't undo my stupidity but can i undo the partial install. i need help quick. thanks.

Are you able to start in safe mode? Anything?

no, can't start in safe mode, it goes to the window with a list of options, ie: safe mode, last good start up, etc. but it doesn't go any further. I can't reach my desktop to uninstall win xp pro. the installation was almost complete when it suddenly quit, i did a complete scandisk, surface and all but to no avail.

Well......you may be in quite a mess.

What happens if you try the XP install again? What makes you think there wasn't enough space on the hard drive? Did it tell you that?

no it didn't tell me there wasn't enough space, i'm only assuming that, what happened is it suddenly quit installing right out of the blue, but now i'm reading in the other threads that this is happening to others... i sure don't undertand all the error messages it throws at me, i wouldn't know what to do anyway. i'm trying to avoid a reformat and a reinstall, but if I have to i'll go that route. i mean i'll reinstall the win 98 se and walk away.

Do you know how much free space you have before you started?

Did you run scandisk from a bootdisk?

If you do: dir /p , at the prompt, what can you see?

Can you load the recovery console and run chkdsk ???

Did you take the XP compatability test before trying to upgrade?

Is it XP Home or Pro? Sorry it is Pro. Getting late. Needs a bigger drive really. Anyhow XP works better on NTFS and a clean install.

Can you get hold of another drive to install to, and slave your existing drive to recover the data?
