I've been trying to figure out what's causing a CPU spike approx. every 5 seconds on my laptop running on windows xp sp3. The spike is generally around 25-30%. I'm using process explorer and see that services.exe is the process. Drilling down into this I see 3 TIDs that repeatedly spike every 5 seconds. All 3 are 'kernel32.dll!Create Thread+0x22'. When I drill down and display the stack for each of these threads I see various lists which don't mean anything to me. It always seems to end with 'kernel32.dll!GetModuleFileNameA+0x1ba'. I'm assuming I installed or configured something at some point in time and my laptop is trying to reach something or do something that's no longer valid. Can someone help me with the next step of determining what's the cause of this spike? When I boot into safe mode this spike is not present. I've done extensive scans of my laptop for any malware and nothing is detected and I see no evidence of any ill side effects other than the continual spike every 5 seconds.

As you say, if it does not spike in Safe Mode, with just minimal drivers and processes it has to be something taking the CPU resources when all is loaded.
I lot of people do not agree with me and I totally respect their views, but I have always found Microsoft`s Clean Up program very good.
As it automatically creates a restore point there is no risk.
Here is the link if you wish to try it.
You will have to allow pop ups and depending on your security you may have to allow the program through your firewall etc.

Please click here to download and install version 2.0.2 of the HijackThis Installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

    Do not fix anything

I would bet its a virus that has attached itself to svchost.exe.
But I am not qualified to deal with it so will bow out and leave it with Mumbodog and Phantom010.
    Best of luck

So I finally took the time to try the method you suggested and after several tries I was able to pinpoint the problem to "ifrmewrk.exe" which is part of Intel ProSet Wireless. I'm not sure yet what functionallity it provides but for now I have it turned off and things seem to be working fine.
