When opening certain applications such as the spreadsheet in Microsoft works, the computer shuts down and restarts. Compaq's tech support said the BIOS probably needed updating so downloaded update. No help, still shuts down and restarts. Not quite sure where to look for the problem. The computer has a restore disk but no separate program disks.
    Any suggestions?

    How old is your computer?
How much memory do you have?
Does all of your memory match? Is it all the same manufacturer, speed?
It sounds like you have a seriously corrupted file or you have some bad memory
that is causing the computer to reboot because the failure is so catastrophic.
I do not believe a bios update would have, could have, or in any way had any ability to resolve this problem.
You may also have a virus.
Try getting a good virus program.
    If you don't have McAfee,
try the following, it is free and much better than Norton.
    It is AVG Free Version.
