    This one has me baffled......

Computer is just sitting there. Nothing going on (or even if it is being used) gets an error on no specific timetable (other than more than once an hour) as follows

    error in C:\winnt\system32\services.exe
    Status code 128

computer will restart in.....(timer counts down to restart)

Any ideas (or is there more info that would help diagnose) ?

    Unfortunately...it's a common "feature" :)

    SYMPTOMS
A Windows 2000-based server that is running Terminal Services and Gateway Services for NetWare may experience an access violation in Services.exe that may generate an error message that is similar to the following message, and the server may then restart:

SERVICES.EXE terminated unexpectedly with status code 128.
    CAUSE
A problem exists in Gateway Services for NetWare that can cause it to access invalid memory.
    RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows 2000. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
260910 How to Obtain the Latest Windows 2000 Service Pack

The English version of this fix should have the following file attributes or later:

Date Time Version Size File name
    ---------------------------------------------------
    25-Jan-02 09:58a 5.0.2195.4872 60,688 Nwwks.dll
    30-May-01 12:03a 5.0.2195.3649 3,584 Spmsg.dll

Ummm...ok...not really sure what that all says. What is NetWare? Standard part of W2K?

    however....

It does have every W2K update installed.....

    Ok,

    Checked those two files....

for Nwwks.dll the version number matched, but nothing else did.

for Spmsg.dll nothing matched, my version number actually appears to be later, as it is 5.3.10.0

    where does this put me?

What service pack do you have installed? You might want to update it. Should be SP-3

SP3 was already installed, as well as all other service/security updates.
