Hello. I am new at this but here's my problem. I know that someone out there can help. I bought a used system from the Salvation Army. It is used primarily by the grandkids to play game. I use it for eBay. The graphics are horrible and the system had slowed down. I attempted to do a restore and followed the Win98 instructions. I do not know where those files went. However, the speed is now sufficient. The color is a different story. Originally my background screen was clouds. They were hues of blue and lt. blue. Now they are grey and white. I cannot see the images on the eBay site very clearly. They are grainy. The characters on some games are not the original color. I have a 14" monitor and the setting is 16 bit. I tried changing to 256 and 16-bit high just to see if if would make a difference, but it will not change. I also checked for additional drivers. I received msg that the best one for this system is already installed (It is set for optimal performance). Does anyone know the proper settings I should be using? Or is it trial and error? I have already made the error. I have been trying to fix this since yesterday. It must be beyond by technical expertise. Thanking you in advance for any help. effmar

I think you're on the right track...it sounds like a video driver problem to me.

Windows is telling you that the best drivers it can find are already installed. Windows isn't always good at finding drivers, though.

In order to install better drivers for the video card (also called "display adapter"), you need to know which video card you have. If you don't know, try downloading, installing and running Belarc Advisor which will display information about your computer...including which video card is present.

Once you know which video card you have if you need help finding drivers, post back.

Miz is correct. Once you know the maker of the video card, you can go to their website and download the most recent or up to date drivers for the specific card you have and install them. Another thing to be aware of is the adapter refresh rate. I had a similar problem when I put in a new video card. I used the disk that came with it to provide the drivers and they were already obsolete. Even then, I downloaded newer drivers and still couldn't get it out of 16 colors.
I took the video card out and tried to return it and was told that after you have the video card in, most current drivers downloaded, you need to change the adapter refresh rate. For some reason the adapter refresh rate defaults to "unknown" and as long as that's what it is set at you can't get out of 16 colors. I took the card home, reinstalled it and darn if it wasn't true. I
changed the adapter refresh from "unknown" to "adapter default". apply >reboot; then changed it from "adapter default" to "optimal" and apply> reboot. (You have to do this in increments because if you go from "unknown" to "optimal" it defaults back to "unknown". Try right clicking on desktop> properties> settings tab> advanced button> adapter tab and change it if on "unknown". Just worth a try. But keep in mind that you may need updated drivers from maker's web site.

As far as the printing problem goes, you may have a corrupted printer driver. Right click on "my computer" click on device manager" and see if you have any yellow exclamation points under printers. You can uninstall the printer and reinstall it to cure the defective printer drivers.

Rickn seemed to be having a similar problem. I checked device manager. It gave me the driver name and the status. It states that the device is working properly. What's your take on this?
