I have a WinXP desktop with a Netgear router that is connected to a cable modem.
Also have a Win98 laptop with a Netgear PC card.

The Win98 laptop connects to the internet without problems.
The Win98 laptop can ping the WinXp desktop. The Winxp Desktop can ping the Win98 laptop.
The problem: I cannot get the Win98 laptop see the Winxp machine at all in network neighborhood (workgroup names are the same).
    Any ideas?

First check to be sure that DHCP is configured on both PC's, next check the 98 and XP machine to make sure that the firewall software isn't causing the problem (if there is one installed on the 98 PC), it will block others from getting to the computer in the default mode.
Check to see if the workgroup you have named shows up on the XP computer, or try opening up the local computers on XP computer and see if anything shows up.
