A friend was getting several "missing files" messages under WIN98SE and re-installed it. Now when the machine boots you get to the Windows green wallpaper and then a error box appears that says that explorer performed an illegal operation. When you press ctrl-alt-del you get the normal box which lets you restart (same result) or shut down.
Several trys at re-installing gets the same result. Everything looks normal during installation. Any ideas????

when you install win 98 do you remove all cards except for the video card?

i have found that you will get a cleaner load of win98 that way

also do you copy the win98 files from the cd to a directory you create on the cd drive called win98

i have found that this will also help you get a cleaner load

I would do as thib4 suggest and one other thing I would format the hard drive. I don't know if you have done this for you didn't say. I assume you did but just wanted to mention it in case you haven't.

If you do it the way suggested you shouldn't have any problems.

What was the exact error message? When the illegal operation error message comes up, you have a choice of clicking on close or clicking on details...click on details and tell us what the first 2 lines say. (e.g: explorer caused an invalid page fault in module msgsrv32.exe at registers.....)
