Windows 10 Home random internet connection drop

I am trying to help someone with an Asus X540SA computer with an Intel Pentium N3700 1.60 GHz processor, 4 GB RAM running 64 bit Windows 10 Home v. 1909.

The problem is that the internet connection randomly drops out, but can be reconnected by clicking on the internet icon in the system tray. When the internet connection drops, the display in the system tray icon provides a reconnect button which works.

This is a Windows 10 problem because we know that the problem is NOT with the ISP supplied modem. This user also has a Windows 7 computer that does NOT encounter this problem.

I have found a number of websites that offer alternative solutions, but none work.

Included in those alternatives that I have tried that did not work is this one:

"Uncheck Option saying Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

There appears to be a rough correlation between this problem and the July Windows 10 update.

This user lives in a low density residential area (almost rural), and therefore there aren't many other Wi-Fi signals in the area.

I also searched both the Windows 10 and Networking forums on this site but did not find anything that seemed relevant.

So . . . does anyone viewing this forum have any suggestions?

The fact that the user has a windows 7 computer that does not have the same problem, only eliminates the problem being the modem/router or connection from there.

To help we need to know what is the adapter being used in the Asus
make and full model
Is it by chance an Intel wifi adpater

cmd prompt with admin rights
type
ipconfig /all
when you have the results
paste them to your reply please

In case you do not know how
right click top of cmd window
click edit
select all
click edit again
click copy

that will copy to clipboard

and then paste here on reply

Have you tried updating/reinstalling the wireless adapter? Do you have an USB adapter that you can use as a test by disabling the one the computer has and just use the USB one?

If the integrated wireless adapter is being used make sure the latest driver from Asus's web site is installed.

1 Download this driver
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=ar9485
3rd down on the list
save the driver to the computer do NOT install it.

2. Go to change adapter settings on the Atheros right click and click properties
scroll down the window to TCP/IPv6 - click to uncheck that box
exit out with apply and ok as necessary

3. Shut down the computer - reboot and see if the problem is resolved.

4. If not go to settings and pause updates for one day
Go back as before but this time click configure for the Atheros at the top part of the window where you went to TCP/IPv6
go to power management and ensure not configured to turn off power to the device

The on the same window go to the drive tab and click on uninstall this device
ensure before clicking OK that you then click delete driver software

5. reboot and install the driver you downloaded before.
Check that IPv6 is still unchecked and that power management is still DO NOT ALLOW eg NOT checked to allow.

Reboot and check stability of wireless

6. If it works then you need to keep your eye on windows trying to offer another update.

HOWEVER the real answer is to get a usb wireless adapter - really suitable for 10 - a few £s and far better than that outdated Qualcom Atheros AR 9485

Edit to my post above
I notice now that you have already configured the power management option.

Ask the person to attempt restarting the device if the problem is not the router, if that doesn't work then turn on and off airplane mode, try resetting the wifi adapter, or use windows 7 or 8 instead of 10, I use an Intel dual-core that runs 2.16Ghz and it struggles to run windows 10 with nothing opened, running Roblox for me was extremely painful, running 5 fps due to 100% CPU usage, on windows 7 I ran 45 fps at lowest settings since Roblox client had more space to breathe in the CPU. A Pentium core can't run windows 10 as of my experiences, windows 7 is a great operating system to run because it uses less ram/resources and doesn't require a high core clock speed, only 1ghz clock speed is needed to run windows 7. A high CPU usage might be affecting the wifi adapter since running windows 10 for me usually has a jump in high CPU usage, each jump may be affecting the wifi adapter, the wifi adapter is being told to throttle speed, range, or power it can operate due to max CPU usage.

Chromebooks also are affected by this, Chromebooks are so cheap and last so long because they use Linux or chrome os which uses 1/10th of what Windows 10 uses.

Windows 10 needs a core clock speed of 2ghz, Windows 10 can still run but extremely slowly, Linux uses 1/10 of 2ghz, Pentium cores, and Celeron cores are commonly found in Chromebooks, to Chromebooks, a core around 0.5ghz would be a lot of CPU to use as it is more than enough to run everything, Linux uses only 0.2ghz or 200mhz, this is all the same reason Chromebooks are used by schools, they are mass-producible, but crazy mass-producible at around $100 per device, they are secure and don't allow or can't run exe files, making them about impossible to hack into or fill with viruses.

It was, in many peoples opinion - the best, but it is NOT great now - due to the security risk.
Add your own antivirus and problem solved, Windows 7 is a best friend for budget gamers like me to use less resources and processing power

Regardless Taolkry, outdated and unsupported operating system are indeed a security risk as stated, Many people choose to assume that risk and that's their perogative but the systems are definitely more vulnerable no matter what anti-virus software you use.
