I have been given a "new" laptop running Windows 2000. However, I do not have the log on password, nor do I have a way to contact the person from whom I received the machine. Is there a "workaround" for this? I have the Win 2000 update disc.

    Thanks,
    Nick

I would suggest reinstalling windows 2k. thats pretty much the only way other than fairly expensive password recovery software.

I've tried to reinstall W2000, but I cannot get past the Log On page....won't boot from CD, unless I'm doing something really wrong...

    Thanks...

You will have to do a brand new install of the Win2k OS to get around the current installation's settings. This means that you will have to create boot floppies and start with them. You can create boot floppies from the Win2k CD on any Win98SE or higher machine. Load the CD, get four new floppies and then do the following: Start-->Run--> Bootdisk(Browse to your CD and choose directory Bootdisk)-->makeboot. Then just follow the prompts.

Or the easy way: visit www.bootdisk.com and download from there the required file. When executed, this file will explode itself across four floppies, creating the Windows 2000 start-up disks you require. After booting with the floppies, you will be prompted to insert the CDROM of Win2k. Note, for this to be successful, you must have the CD Key for installation.

    Hope this helps--

Have you tried to see if you can find a guest listed and log on without a password?
