This info above is not for the PC in trouble.
I have an ACER laptop and it all of a sudden went to a blue screen and then tried to reboot to a black screen with mouse pointer only. Tried my win 7 upgrade CD to see if I could repair and it only loads to the same end. No options are asked for.
The blue screen has appeared a couple of times and states a unusable boot sector.
I would like to run a checkdisk but cannot find one to put on a memory stick with a minimal operating system.
Any help would be appreciated. I have tried all the reboot choices, F8, F2 and F12.
I tried to use an old windows XP install CD and when I select install it says a HDD can not be found.

    Welcome to Tech Support Guy
so may I presume then it is totally irrelevant, insofar as it has no relationship whatsoever to the computer with the problem

Now the next question is -
On the Acer that is the problem
What please is the full model details
Which operating system is installed Windows 7 as an upgrade from the original and if so which windows 7 please
What happens when you try and boot to F8 advanced boot options please
Why would you attempt to install XP if it is 7.

I am sorry I cannot follow what OS you have
Did the blue screen have any message in otherwords was it a BSOD = Blue Screen of Death

You need to get hold of a bootable CD like the Ultimate Boot CD (or USB) and try that.
I would try the disk as a second disk in another machine.
Usually boot sector errors indicate a dead disk, but it may just be the cable or disk controller, hence the try it elsewhere.
