Hi, many thanks in advance for any insight.

My son was bought a HP 5700 several years ago for school work (yea right - but mainly for games) it had win 7 pro 32 bit and worked extremely well, when GWX came up he converted it and it was not until a couple of weeks ago he asked if it could go back to win 7.

well i know he didn't roll back after the 30 days, so i decided to install win 7 home 64 bit, bought a MAR copy and 4GB of memory, the memories installed and so is the program, code seems to work, but it appears it does not want to load updates, tried the Mr Fix it, running the MS troubleshooter etc, all to no avail.

is there any way to tell if it is just a matter of putting the pc into check for updates and wait until the several hundred appear or if it just hanging, on a usual pc it doesn't take that long untill something comes up, i have tried several times and in one instance a report (i forget where from) stated that the permissions was not set. I have reinstalled and registered the OS and everything appears to be ok, just cannot tell whether the update list is being gathered.

as another option, is there a location where I can download all the win 7 updates (this win 7 home already has sp1 as part of the disks repetoir), ideally I want to get this pc fully operational before creating system disks etc and images before handing over to my son.

Is that computer actually a HP Compaq dc5700 model which comes in different case sizes?
What's the serial number(S/N) and product number(P/N) on yours?
I'm not sure what you mean by a "MAR copy".
Can you be more specific about that copy of Windows 7?

I believe that means it came from a refurbished machine (from a Microsoft Authorized Refurbisher). As far as I know, that license cannot be transferred to another machine.

I've been doing some researching, and it appears the HP Compaq dc5700 minitower and small form factor models originally came with one of these operating systems:
    Windows XP Professional 32-bit
    Windows Vista Home Basic 32-bit
    Windows Vista Business 32-bit

yes you are correct, the pc is a small form factor, was installed with win 7 professional via a reseller of refurbished machines on a group licence, so it's a second hand machine sold via amazon, worked very well (I'm a lover of HP as i've never had any issues hardware wise to speak of on company machines), yes the MAR copy is a Microsoft authorised reseller copy, first time I have ever used this type of software, apparently it's entirely legal to use, as long it's only used on the one hard drive and motherboard etc.

As stated, it's original software was updated to win 10 - so I had to install a completely fresh version of win 7 to 1) delete win 10, 2) upgrade to 64 bit. The pc has a AMD 64 processor and was fitted with 2GB of ram, my previous project of upgrading a machine used a fresh hard drive as well, this time I decided to just over write the whole original disk, a 160GB unit - I would get the whole specs, but I cannot find the tool on here for selecting it, that and I am away from the pc while my son is 'playing' on his x box.

Found the system reporting tool - will add the spec's hopefully later.

it may be the computers fine, did notice it had downloaded some updates, unsure when they got loaded, but it has done some, it's all the important security ones I am worried about.

Please run the MGA Diagnostic Tool and post back the report it creates:
    • Download MGADiag to your desktop.
    • Double-click on MGADiag.exe to launch the program
    • Click "Continue"
    • Ensure that the "Windows" tab is selected (it should be by default).
    • Click the "Copy" button to copy the MGA Diagnostic Report to the Windows clipboard.
    • Paste the MGA Diagnostic Report back here in your next reply.

Your MGADiag log shows a dc5800 instead of a dc5700.
That HP motherboard code is also for a dc5800.

From what I can determine, the HP Compaq dc5800 originally came with one of these operating systems:
    Windows XP Professional 32-bit
    Windows Vista Business 32-bit

    I'll leave you with Cookiegal.
