    Hello,

I have a Acer laptop not even one year old yet... Came with Windows Vista and I got one of those free upgrades to Windows 7. Lately, whenever I go to shutdown or restart it hangs there, even if left for hours. This is worrysome since I always have to hold down the power button to force a shutdown.

Also, I am using the free AVG antivirus software, and lately when I go to 'system scan' it starts, but does not scan more than 1 object and it hangs there, looking as if it is scanning but does not count upwards. I am not able to 'stop scan'. I eventually have to end the process using Cntrl+alt+delete.

Other weird symptoms: windows explorer is getting hung up, I've tried to delete a shortcut for example and it will just work and work and not get anywhere until I end the program and it restarts windows explorer. I've tried to delete programs and that too is slow or non responsive to the point where you just end the program too.

If anyone can get me started on fixing these problems (maybe I have a virus? something that is running in the background and is stopping AVG from running?) I can provide whatever information you may need.

    Thank you very much!

well if you want to ensure about viruses you can make a log from hijack this and put it in HJT logs. did you changed anything in your system before? Does it happen only with certain things (win explorer) or whenever you do something with it, can you normally log off or it also freeze what do you see when it is turning off

I don't know how to make a hijack this log, but will google it and see what I can do if it'll help people help me and keep moving with this issue.

I tried starting my laptop in safe mode, and while in safe mode I was finally able to shut down without getting hung up, and also was the first time in a long time that I could leave my computer on and it would actually wake up after not being touched for a long time (usually I have to force a shut down because the screen is black even though it sounds like its running).

I downloaded and ran SUPERAntiSpyware last night and i finally got it to run (in safe mode) but it only found 75 Adware tracking cookies.

Your help is very much appreciated.

I'm not sure if this was done while in safe mode... if you restart while in safe mode and its successful does it come back on in safe mode too?

Again thanks for any help here.

Also, got this message on first attempt to make the logfile:

"For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HiJackThis may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:

    notepad C:\\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press enter. Find the line(s) HiJackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts.' (with quotes), and reboot.

For Vista: simply, exit HiJackThis, rightclick on HiJackThis icon, choose 'Run as administrator'.
