Got the following message --- this copy of windows is not genuine build 7600.

I can assure you that my copy of windows 7 is genuine. Regardless, the message changed my desktop background to black and apparently I am now prevented from getting windows automatic updates.

What happened and how do I correct this problem?

How are you so sure that your copy is genuine?

Have you activated this version of windows?

Go to Start>click Control Panel>click System and Security>

Click System, scroll down toward bottom of page, if it is activated it will say this.

If I remember right, if not activated, there is a button that says to activate, you click on it. Btw, I just found this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Activating-Windows-frequently-asked-questions

    I found this info, http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2008385.

If this doesn't help, please be patient while waiting for someone with more experience to help you.

    Thank you.

this issue is in regard to an automatic update that installed that checks for pirated windows installations. However, the update has a glitch that causes a not genuine message to appear when the windows program is genuine.

I need to know how to undo the faulty update

You can see all the installed updates from the control panel.

Please run the MGA Diagnostic Tool and post back the report it creates:
    • Download MGADiag to your desktop.
    • Double-click on MGADiag.exe to launch the program
    • Click "Continue"
    • Ensure that the "Windows" tab is selected (it should be by default).
    • Click the "Copy" button to copy the MGA Diagnostic Report to the Windows clipboard.
    • Paste the MGA Diagnostic Report back here in your next reply.

7600 IS a beta version, i know coz i used to use a cracked version of it, i no longer do this as i have a job now and paid for it, i did however once accidently download an optional update which was the security checker, it found my crack straight away and screwed me (and rightly so) why its an optional update i dont know i thought it would be a compulsory one.

Rightly so is correct. In addition to being illegal, I've seen cases of cracked OS's containing tons of malware, but as that's not pertinent to the thread at hand, I'll just leave it at that. Glad you learned and moved on.

Still waiting for a response from jpaal, however.

I am not sure where people are getting their information, because Build 7600 is the current released version. It is not beta, and should not be considered illegal or pirated simply because somebody posts that they have Build 7600.

Build 7600 revision 16384 definitely is illegal, it was leaked to P2P sites in July 2009. Build 7600 revision 16385 can be validated using MGADiag, as suggested above.

Combined with MGADiag, WVCheck is a good way to determine if Windows is genuine.
