Hello. These are the error messages that I get on my Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate PC and the different steps that I have performed:

"System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer’s files and settings were not changed. Details: System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point. Source: %SystemRoot%\registration Destination: ComPlusStaging."

I ran the file checker tool (sfc.exe) from the command prompt and no missing or corrupted files were reported. I got a confirmation that no problems were found.

In the services.msc console, I was able to set the COM+ System Application to "Automatic", but when I tried to start it manually, I got this error message: "Windows could not start the COM+ System Application service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start control request in a timely fashion."

I uninstalled the .net Framework software and resinstalled the latest 4 version.

I rebooted the computer many times throughout the troubleshooting process.

I turned off MS Security Essentials (Anti-virus) to see if this would resolve the situation, but to no avail.

I tried doing a system restore from the Windows 7 Installation DVD, using the repair option, but I got exactly the same "ComPlusStaging" error message.

On one of the many posts that I read, it points to the Volume Shadow Copy as being a possible problem. In the services.msc console, I set it to automatic and was able to start it manually. It has continued to load automatically and run on each reboot.

I also received this in my troubleshooting process: Error code: 0x80110474 COMADMIN_E_REGDB_SYSTEMERR The COM+ registry database detected a system error during the troubleshooting process.

One of the solutions that seemed interesting was doing a reinstall of the windows system files only, using the original OEM DVD, but since I had installed service pack 1 and that I could not find a way to remove it, this solution was not recommended, as it could screw things up further.

Although I'm not a computer guru, I'm normally pretty good at finding solutions to my PC problems, but this one has got me stumped.

    Any other ideas? Thanks.

    My system configuration:

you know your stuff so all i can say is in my experience its best to delete all points of sr reset the size and re make a point usually best to reset your page file also

but always followed by a check disk -full check not a cant be bothered to wait one which we get a lot especially on bigger drives
    sfc i always run twice
check clock is synced check updates on auto

    Thanks for your reply fel1x

In my many troubleshooting steps I did delete all points of system restore and I did reset the size to 10% of my massive 2TB HDD, but how would you "reset the page file" that you suggest?

BTW, I did run sfc twice, my clock is synced and all MS updates are current.

I will do a check disk, just in case this helps and I will report back.

... also, I did run the system restore from the boot Windows 7 OEM DVD, as described in my original post, but this did not work either.

I ran the check disk routine and no errors were reported. I tried the system restore and it's exactly the same thing, it still gives me the "ComPlusStaging" error.

By the way, I also had tried to do a system restore in safe mode, as this was one of the workarounds that was suggested in some forums. This didn't work either.

Yes I had come across this possible fix. The issue with this is that my copy of the Windows 7 Ultimate OEM DVD does not have the SP1 on it and, as I described in my original post, and it can't be removed from my computer (I tried). Thanks anyway for all your suggestions fel1x.

I cleaned up my HDD and must have erased the needed files to remove it. I installed SP1 at least a year ago. As everything was stable for many months, I didn't think that cleaning my disk would cause me a future issue. I have learned from this and will not remove these files in the future, until I absolutely need the disk space.

How can I get the event ID for 0x80110474 COMADMIN_E_REGDB_SYSTEMERR The COM+ ?

should be on left hand side in event viewer

could try reinstalling sp1 over itself i do not think i have ever tried it though, if i was i would create an image first

a full wipe and reinstallation is only way to go otherwise wait for sp2 which should be in few months time

do you have other error codes , id s as your one is so rare its hardly known

are you fully up to date via microsoft update

and you did not say if your windows is genuine as copys often fail system restore

I like the SP1 reinstall idea. I will look it up and if I do try it, I will definitely do an image first.

I am fully up to date with with MS update.

I have and used the original OEM genuine DVD.

Most of these events are repetitive on a day by day basis. There are others too, but they seemed less pertinent. The Volume Shadow Copy ones seems to be the most relevant. One of the last ones that I put in, should have been resolved, because I did increase the size of the shadow copy storage to 10% of my massive 2TB HDD.

Is there a way to export a log in some type of text format that I might be able to attach to this post?
