I have a HP desktop with windows 7 on it. lately(the last 3 or 4 days) when I shutdown windows goes through the shutdown process, my monitor goes off, the power light blinks and windows restarts. Can anyone help me out? I have done a system restore, and scanned with my antivirus software with no resolution to the problem.

How are you shutting down the machine? Going to Start, Shutdown?

Have you tried the Default ?
Start - Power Options - Change when the computer sleeps -
Change Advance Power Settings - Restore Plan Default.

This doesn't answer your question, but here's some information that you should have:

Here is the support site for the HP Pavilion p6310y desktop.

You should add and save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can readily refer to it when needed.

If you don't have a recovery disc kit for that desktop, I suggest you order it from here.

If the hard drive dies and needs to be replaced, or if the built-in recovery partition becomes damaged, you'll need a recovery disc kit to get that desktop back to its original condition when you bought it.

Boot into the BIOS "Its either F10 or F1 to access on bootup" and set it to defaults. Save the settings, exit out and restart. Once in Windows try shutting down normally.

Boot to Safe Mode by tapping F8 on bootup, select Safe Mode at the top. once in Safe mode, will it shutdown normally from there?

Since Windows has it own built-in power management, lets disable power management in the BIOS. It is entirely possible that there is a conflict between the Windows power management and the bios power management.

    Please post the results.
