I would appreciate answers to the following questions regarding windows 8.

1. In the windows' explorer, I do not find an option to set the order in which file details are shown. Has this option disappeared in windows 8?

2. Sometimes, the Iexplorer window expands to full size without my clicking the icon in the upper right corner. How does one prevent this from happening ?

3. How do I activate the windows defender, when Mcaffee license expires ? (It came pre-installed with a validity for one month)

4. My computer is Dell Inspiron 14Z. There was no bootup CD with it. How can I create a bootuo CD? and how do I change bootup settings, that indicate that when there is a bootup CD in the drive, the computer should bootup from it?

5. How do I create a bootup and recovery CD?

6. I do not see a recovery partition on the hard drive. How can I restore the system to factory settings?

7. How does one boot in 'safe mode' in case the computer fails to boot?

Thanks.

In the explorer window, click on the 'View' tab and you get to view files in Extra large, large, medium, list and detail mode.
You can also select 'Sort by', so you can order by Name, Date, Type, Size etc.

>2. Sometimes, the Iexplorer window expands to full size without my clicking the icon in the upper right corner. How does one prevent this from happening ?

See tips here http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/ietips.htm

>3. How do I activate the windows defender, when Mcaffee license expires ? (It came pre-installed with a validity for one month)
Open Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services and change 'Windows Defender Service' to Automatic and start it.

>4. My computer is Dell Inspiron 14Z. There was no bootup CD with it. How can I create a bootuo CD? and how do I change bootup settings, that indicate that when there is a bootup CD in the drive, the computer should bootup from it?

It depends on how you got Windows 8. If you download it, then there should be a WindowsESD folder on your hard disk with an ISO file in it which you can burn the contents of to a DVD.

>5. How do I create a bootup and recovery CD?

Press Windows + F, and search for 'Recovery' in Settings, select Recovery and then select 'Create a recovery drive'

>6. I do not see a recovery partition on the hard drive. How can I restore the system to factory settings?

See above.

>7. How does one boot in 'safe mode' in case the computer fails to boot?

Press Ctrl + Alt + Del, then hold down SHIFT key and select Restart. You can then boot into recovery options automatically and select Safe boot from there.

Dear Peter,
Thank you very much for your very helpful answers.

1.The internet Explorer window however still opens to full screen sometimes.
2. 'windows F' brings up the appropriate options. So it should be possible to create a boot CD.

I have encountered another problem. Occasionally, the wifi signal disappears. 'windows' fixes the problem. I have noticed that every time it is fixing this problem, it says that it is resetting the modem.

Is this a modem inside the computer? I wonder why it needs resetting about once every other day. Is there a fix for this problem?

Thanks,
Preet

1. You are possibly referring to a random , or custom, sort? Unfortunately, that is not available in Windows 8.
2. Is it only in IE, or all windows? Perhaps you need to look in the "ease of access centre", options. Scroll down to "Make the mouse easier to use2. In there you will see the last option "Prevent windows from..etc", and tick it. OK out of the windows.
3. You may have difficulty with a straightforward uninstall, with Mcafee. It is necessary to uninstall all traces of the program, before Defender will work again. Have a browse for options. Here is one, for example:

http://www.pchell.com/virus/uninstallmcafee.shtml

After you have applied, open the action center and there you should see a message asking you to restart the Defender.
