When I moved my laptop from further than 2-3 feet, I lose the connection. After calling Dell (Inspiron 17r), and doing an uninstall and reinstall of the centrino driver, a reset of the router, a reset of pass codes and everything else Dell techs could think of, we still only got a "limited" connection notice otherwise no Internet connection at all, wireless or wired. Dell says they will send me a Windows 8 disk and I will have to reload the operating system and in the process losing all current programs and data. Is there anything else you can suggest? Remember, I have no access to the Internet now.

What firewall or security suite is, or ever was, on the system?

Make sure you have the latest ethernet and wireless drivers from Dell's web site.

Could be a loose antenna. If you can easily access the wireless card through a cover on the bottom make sure the antenna leads are secure.
